George Coughlin

20 August 2008

The club is saddened to hear of the death of one of its founders.
George Coughlan, who died early on Saturday, August 16, at his Devonport home, was one of a small group of men living in Campbells Bay soon after World War 2 who lobbied the local council to provide tennis courts in Centennial Park. The club opened in 1948.
We are privileged that George lived long enough to attend the club's 60th Anniversary celebration on February 23 2008, where he described how the founders raised funds and built the facilities.
George was looking forward to his 90th birthday at Labour Weekend. Just a week before his death, the club received a small donation from him, with a request for a photo of his speech at the 60th.
He was active to the last, attending a rugby lunch at North Harbour Stadium the day before his sudden death.
We have lost a dedicated and valued life member and extend our condolences to his wife and family.
